Motorized Shopping Carts: Names and Helpful Tips

Motorized shopping carts are commonly called electric shopping carts, mobility carts, or electric mobility scooters with shopping baskets. You may also hear them called power carts, especially when a store provides them for customers who need help getting around while they shop.

These carts combine a powered mobility device with space for groceries or other purchases, making them different from the standard push carts you find near a store entrance. The exact name varies by retailer and region, so using any of these terms should help you explain what you need.

A store-provided motorized shopping cart generally has a built-in basket and is intended for use during your visit, while a personal mobility scooter is typically used by its owner in a wider range of settings. Both can help someone travel through a store without walking the entire time, although their controls, size, and storage space can differ.

If you are looking for a cart at a store, ask an employee where the electric shopping carts or customer mobility carts are located. If you use your own mobility scooter, consider how you will carry your shopping items without blocking your controls or exceeding the scooter’s weight limit.

You might choose a motorized cart if standing or walking through a large store is difficult because of a disability, injury, pain, or fatigue. Availability can vary, so calling ahead is a practical step if having a cart will make your visit more manageable.

Before setting off, take a moment to familiarize yourself with the controls and adjust the seat if an adjustment is available. Drive slowly around shoppers and displays, keep your path clear, and ask store staff for help if you need it.

A shopping list organized by aisle can help you move through the store efficiently, whether you use a motorized cart or a standard one. Leave enough room in the basket for your purchases, and avoid stacking items where they obstruct your view.
