Do Grocery Stores Have to Have Motorized Carts?

Grocery stores generally do not have to provide motorized shopping carts for customers. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a store must provide access to its goods and services and make reasonable modifications when required, but that does not create a blanket requirement to supply electric carts.

If walking through a store is difficult for you, call ahead and ask what options are available, such as a motorized cart, a manual wheelchair, or assistance from an employee. If you use your own wheelchair or other mobility device, ask about any areas that may be hard to navigate, such as narrow aisles or temporary displays, so you can plan your visit.

Even stores that offer motorized carts may have a limited number, and a cart may be unavailable because it is in use or charging. Before you start shopping, make sure you can reach the controls comfortably, follow the cart’s posted instructions, and ask an employee for help if you are unsure how to operate it.
